BARRINGTON, RI – The development of a long-term educational facilities plan in Barrington is progressing following February 9 meetings of the Barrington School Committee and the Barrington Town Council. At their meeting on Thursday evening, the Barrington School Committee unanimously resolved to approve an updated RIDE Stage 1 Necessity of School Construction Application for re-submission to the Rhode Island Department of Education School Building Authority. Following the School Committee’s resolution, Barrington Town Council members also voted in unanimous support of the Stage 1 resubmission.

Originally prepared by Barrington Public Schools and the architectural firm Kaestle Boos Associates, Inc. (KBA) in 2021, the newly updated Stage I Necessity of School Construction Application has been expanded to identify needs for all schools in the District (other than Barrington Middle School).

Barrington Public Schools is committed to the development of a new plan that prioritizes facility improvements at schools, including renovations, repairs, and new construction. The forthcoming Stage II Application will provide a construction plan that reflects both Barrington Public Schools and Barrington School Committee’s educational priorities. Facility improvements align with district and community support for correcting the inadequate conditions and space deficiencies of school buildings and increasing educational equity and student engagement.

The Barrington School Committee and School Administration are in the process of hiring an Owner Project Manager (OPM) to provide construction services expertise to Barrington Public Schools. This spring, a planning schedule will be published to allow ample time for discussion among district, committee, and community members before all decision-making, submission, and construction deadlines. Embedded into the planning schedule will be multiple opportunities for community engagement during and after the current school year.
