Dear BPS Families,

Monday is our first day of school, and I know our students are anxious to meet their teachers and our teachers are looking forward to welcoming their students to what will be an exciting school year.

The following are District updates regarding the 22-23 District Calendar, Free and Reduced Lunches and Parent SEL Workshop at Portsmouth High School:

Barrington Public Schools Calendar Revisions 2022-2023

Attached is the revised District School Calendar for the 2022-2023 school year. ( attached and on BPS Website).

The following dates will remain the same as teacher professional development days, students do not report to school:

8/25, 8/26, 3/13/2023 (3 PD Days)

November 23, 2022 - No students will report to school – 11/23 will be a Professional Responsibility Day for Teachers.

December 9, 2022 - Students in grades 6-12 will report to school as a typical school day. Grades PK-5 Parent-teacher Conference/Engagement Day

May 10, 2023 Students in PK-5 grades will report to school as a typical school day.  Family Engagement Day for 6-12 (1 PD Day Secondary)

Inclement Weather Days

We have been able to bank a total of 5 Inclement Weather Days where students will not be required to make up the days: These inclement weather flexibilities were afforded by RIDE in August 2022, in alignment with our 5 instructional minute plan and our literacy plan.

2 Inclement Weather Days - No synchronous or asynchronous teaching and no PD - teachers and students will be off as we have added 5 minutes to the school day schedule.

3 Snow Days - No synchronous or asynchronous teaching as RIDE ( this school year only) has allowed Districts a total of 3 professional days to meet the State Literacy requirements for the 2023-2024 school year.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE REGARDING FREE AND REDUCED SCHOOL LUNCH

During the pandemic, the Federal government allowed all students to receive free meals. That waiver will end this fall.

Families must now fill out the Household Application for Free and Reduced-Price Meals in order to qualify for free or reduced breakfasts and lunches for the upcoming school year. This is very important and we encourage all families to complete and return the application to see if they qualify.  There is no risk in applying to see if you are eligible.

Applying is fast, easy and confidential. Sign up for reduced or free breakfasts and lunches by downloading and completing the Free/Reduced Lunch Application and mailing the completed form to:  Barrington Public Schools, 283 County Rd, Barrington, RI 02806.   You may also obtain a Free/Reduced Lunch Application at the School Administration office.

In addition, you may also consider applying for SNAP, the federal nutrition program that provides eligible residents with monthly financial assistance to purchase groceries. The application for SNAP is available now and more information can be found at: https://healthyrhode.ri.gov/HIXWebI3/DisplayHomePage

If you have any questions please contact Kate Garabedian garabediank@barringtonschools.org , Administrative Assistant to the Director of Administration and Finance.
