Superintendent update June 30, 2023

June 30, 2023

 Good afternoon,

A week ago today was the last day of school. BPS has had an incredible year thanks to the continued support from our community and the hard work of our students, educators, staff, and administrators. Your collective dedication to our District’s mission of empowerment and the support you give to one another continue to provide our students with an excellent educational experience.

The school year's conclusion offers us time to reflect on the past ten months, celebrate our accomplishments and achievements, and look forward with excitement for a new school year.

Barrington Public Schools’ recovery following the pandemic has been remarkable. Our students have continued to exhibit admirable resilience and persistence this year. Our Barrington High School Class of 2023 were just first-year students at BHS when the pandemic emergency was declared in 2020 and they navigated an unprecedented high school experience with tenacity, grace, and perseverance. We should be proud of our newest graduates, and of every student in our District, for the growth in learning and personal development that has been demonstrated this year.

We are also marking the  2022-2023 school year with many achievements and accomplishments to celebrate.

  • Our students’ talents and intellect have been acknowledged by organizations like the Rhode Island Department of State, the Rhode Island American Choral Directors Association, and the Rhode Island Art Educators Association. Many of our students, both individually and as teams, have also showcased their learning this year in competitions across the country such as the Regeneron ISEFthe FIRST LEGO League Razorback International, the National History Day Contest, and the National Science Olympiad. Congratulations to our students (and to all who have supported their learning, growth, and success) for these accomplishments!
  • The determination and stamina of our athletics teams and coaches have been recognized by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League, the Rhode Island Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, and All-America. This year, many of our athletics teams also advanced to and placed in state tournaments, playoffs, and championships. Congratulations to our athletes and coaches for these achievements!
  • The commitment and ingenuity of our educators and administrators have been rewarded by the Rhode Island Department of Education, the New England League of Middle Schools, and the National Life Group Foundation. Congratulations to our dedicated educators and building administrators for receiving these much-deserved accolades!
  • The rigor and quality of our schools have been honored by the National Blue-Ribbon Schools Program, the U.S. Department of Education, the Rhode Island Department of Education, and Best Buddies International. Congratulations to all members of our BPS learning community for the work and dedication that led to these outstanding recognitions!

As we set our sights on preparing for a new school year, I am excited for what awaits our students, educators, and community in August. During the summer, our District will continue to examine and improve our practices.  Our goal is to prepare all students to be collaborative learners while continuing to build strong, respectful, and lasting relationships, in an environment where all students feel a sense of belonging.

It is a pleasure and a privilege to be part of such a dynamic district as Barrington Public Schools. We are very fortunate to live in a school district where students come to school ready to learn, educators prepared to instruct, staff ready to provide support, and families and a community whose engagement is a foundation of our students’ learning, development, and success.

Have a safe and enjoyable summer,

Mike Messore
