Backpack Express

Good afternoon,

Hope you are enjoying today’s sunshine.  Here’s this week’s Backpack Express:

  • Volunteer Orientation:  All new volunteers have to participate in a short volunteer orientation.  There was one scheduled at Sowams but we did have to cancel it.  The new date for the orientation is Wednesday, October 26 at 9:00 in the morning.  It will take place here at Sowams.  Information may be found here.

  • Oktoberfest Class Basket Raffle:  Earlier this week, you received a hard copy of the notice about the class basket raffle.  The raffle will take place on November 21, 2022.  All tickets must be purchased and sent to school by November 16, 2022.  Ticket prices and directions about filling out the tickets along with a description of each basket may be found here.  If you need more tickets, you may reach out to our school office by email Mrs. Kotsiris (kotsirisc@barringtonschools.org).

  • Flu Shot Clinic:  Sowams is hosting a flu shot clinic on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, from 4:00pm-8:00pm.  It is recommended that you preregister to get the flu shot.  There is no charge for the shot. You may register at schooflu.com.  More information may be found here.

  • Book Fair:   Our fall book fair is coming up.  It will take place the week of October 31, 2022.  Students will visit the book fair with their classrooms on either Monday or Tuesday.  (We will let you know what day your child will visit.)  Children will also have the opportunity to visit during their recess times throughout the week.  On Thursday evening, November 3, 2022, there will be a family night from 5:30pm-7:00pm.  This is a time for the family to visit the fair.  Volunteers are needed throughout the week and for set-up and clean-up.  If you have submitted all of the paperwork to volunteer and are on the approved list, you are eligible to volunteer.  You may sign-up to volunteer here.

  • Community Notices:  There are several community notices from Girl Scouts  and Barrington Youth Basketball

Monday is the Hindu holiday of Diwali (festival of lights).  To those who celebrate, we wish you a Diwali that brings happiness, prosperity, and joy to you and your family.

Enjoy the day.

Best,

Jim Callahan
