Owl with Backpack

Good afternoon,

Today and Friday are exciting days at Sowams.  The slab to the addition is being poured.  Today, the gym floor was poured; Friday, the rest of the building.  Here’s a short video of the cement being poured.

The rest of this week’s Backpack Express isn’t going to be nearly as exciting as the cement pour but here’s this week’s information for you.

  • Octoberfest:  Saturday’s Octoberfest was a huge success.  I want to thank the two Chairs of the event–Justine Rua and Carly Stearnbourne–for all of their hard work.  I also want to thank all of the volunteers who helped make this day possible and successful.  It takes a lot of people a lot of time for this to be a fun day for our school and our community.

  • Parent Engagement Series:  This great program continues on October 27, 2026, at 6:00 in the evening at Barrington Middle School.  The topic for this session is Parent Child Communication–Building Boundaries.  Information about the series may be found here.

  • PTO Directory:  Our PTO is putting together a family directory.  If you are interested in having your information in the Directory, you may complete this form.  Once the Directory is available, we will share the link.

  • Sowams Speedway:  Speedway is our fun track event during recess where kids run/walk laps to earn prizes! Sign up for any Monday or Wednesday from 11:50-12:15 and/or 12:20-12:45. Volunteer sign up may be found here.

  • Town Meeting:  We have a Town Meeting on Monday afternoon starting at 1:45.  Mrs. Fagan’s class is hosting.  Other classes will participate; your child’s teacher will let you know if your child’s class is presenting.  As a reminder, if your child’s pick up plan is changing due to the Town Meeting, you need to send a note that morning letting us know of the change.  Students who will be picked up will be dismissed at the end of the day in the back of the building.  We will not accept changes to dismissal in the afternoon.  It is too busy in the office at that time to make any last minute changes.

  • Thanksgiving Assistance:  With the holiday season in the near future, we understand some families may need some assistance with their Thanksgiving meal.  If you would like assistance with this, please reach out to Michele Marcello, our school social worker.  She will assist you with resources to make sure everyone’s holiday is special.  You may contact her through email (marcellom@barringtonschools.org) or at school (401.247.3180).

  • Halloween:  Halloween will be here before you know it.  Just a couple bits of information for you about Halloween:

    • Our students do not dress up in costumes when coming to school.

    • We are a no food celebration school.  That means, no candy can be sent in to be passed out to students for Halloween (or any other celebration).  If anyone brings in candy to distribute, it will not be given out; rather, it will be sent home with the child who brought it in.

  • Bus Evacuation Drill:  As a reminder, Thursday morning students who take the bus to school will participate in a bus evacuation drill.  This will take place at Hampden Meadows School but will include our students.

You may find the Sowams School Library update here.

Enjoy the rest of your day.

Best,

Jim Callahan

Principal
