Backpack Express

Good afternoon,

Today’s the day to read this week’s Backpack Express.  There is some good information in here for you.

  • Yearbook Boosters: Want to congratulate your child on a successful year? Want to thank a special adult at Sowams? The boosters are the way to do it! More information can be found here. Boosters cost $15 per message and are on sale now through April 3rd.

  • Sowams Yearbook: I promise you - your child will ask you for a yearbook after the deadline for ordering (April 28th) has passed! Yearbooks are $23. To order your Sowams yearbook for 2025/26 go to: www.coffeepond.com; Click on Yearbook Program tab; select Yearbook Order & enter password: sowamsstar

  • SurveyWorks Parents:  Each year, the Rhode Island Department of Education asks various stakeholders in our school to take the SurveyWorks survey.  Parents are asked to take about 15 minutes to complete this survey.  The survey may be accessed here.  See the email sent to you on Monday from me.

  • SurveyWorks Grade 3 Students:  Our third grade students will also take part in a SurveyWorks survey during class time.  If you want to opt your child out of the survey, please complete this form by March 17, 2026.

  • Town Meeting:  We have a Town Meeting on Monday afternoon.  Mrs. Felag’s class is hosting it.  Other classes will present during our Meeting.  If your child’s class is presenting, your child’s teacher will let you know.  If you are picking your child up after Town Meeting, they will be dismissed at the end of the day.  If you do not normally pick your child up from school, you MUST send a note indicating you are doing this.  If we do not receive a note, your child will go home their normal way.  It is too busy for any last second changes.

  • Time School Starts:  School starts at 7:55.  This means students need to be in the building by this time.  If they are not, they are considered late.

  • PTO Calendar:  The PTO has put together a March calendar.  You may access it here.

  • Jump Rope for Heart:  Our students, along with students at Nayatt and Primrose Hills schools,  will be participating in the American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge during their physical education classes this month.  More information about this may be found here.

  • Fun Friday:  March 13, 2026, is our monthly Fun Friday.  It is designated Leprechaun Day.  Wear green, rainbows, and shamrocks.

  • No School on March 20, 2026:  In honor of Eid Al-Fitr, marking the of Ramadon, we will not have school on Friday, March 20, 2026.

  • School On March 23, 2026:  As a reminder, because of our latest snow storm, Barrington Public Schools will now have school on Monday, March 23, 2026.

  • Community Cookbook:  A former Sowams student who is working on her Senior Project is putting together a community cookbook and she would love to have you contribute your favorite recipe.  More information may be found here.

  • Community Notices:  There are quite a few community notices this week:  Healthy Kids Running, April break art camp, YMCA summer camp, Barrington Pop Warner football and cheerleading, BHS Spring Science Festival, and Thrive Outside.

Have a relaxing evening.

Best,

Jim Callahan
