Backpack Express

Good afternoon,

This week’s Backpack Express is ready for your viewing and reading pleasure:

  • Family Math Night:  Our annual Family Math Night is scheduled for Wednesday, January 28, 2026, from 5:30-7:00.  You can drop in or stay the whole time.  This is a great time to learn different games you can play with your child with a simple deck of cards and/or some dice.  Registration may be done here.  More information may be found here.

  • Town Meeting:  We have a Town Meeting on Monday afternoon.  Mrs. Gleason’s class is hosting it.  Other classes will present during our Meeting.  If your child’s class is presenting, your child’s teacher will let you know.  If you are picking your child up after Town Meeting, they will be dismissed at the end of the day.  If you do not normally pick your child up from school, you MUST send a note indicating you are doing this.  If we do not receive a note, your child will go home their normal way.  It is too busy for any last second changes.

  • PTO at PC Women’s Basketball:  The PTO is sponsoring an afternoon at a Providence College Women’s basketball game.  It is happening on Sunday, February 8, 2026.  Information on purchasing tickets may be found here.

  • Book Drive:  A former Sowams student is working on her Senior Project and one component of the Project is a book collection drive.  She is collecting gently used children’s books.  There is a box in the school foyer for any donations that you would like to give.  Information may be found here.

  • Movie Screenagers:  The Nayatt PTO is hosting a viewing of the movie Screenagers on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at 6:00 PM at the Barrington Public Library.  Our interim superintendent, Robert Mitchell, has seen it and says, “ It's a must see for parents.  It's an opportunity for parents to learn how screen time is impacting our children."  Click here to register.  More information may be found here.

  • Dental Screening:  Each year, the state requires students to have a dental screening.  If you have a dentist for your child and they see the dentist, they do not need to be screened at school.  However, for us to know that, you need to complete the form Mrs. Mungovan sent out to you  The screening will take place on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, in the morning.  If you have any questions, you may reach out to Mrs. Mungovan (our school nurse teacher) at mungovans@barringtonschools.org.

  • Morning Drop Off:  When you are dropping your child off in the morning, please notice the traffic on Sowams Rd. In order to avoid a large back up, your child should get out of the vehicle wherever there is a sidewalk (not just at the front door).  If everyone lets their child out and have the child walk to the front doors of the school, traffic won’t be as backed up on Sowams Rd.  Also, if there are no vehicles in front of you and your child is still in the vehicle, pull all the way up to the end of the canopy in front of the school.  When you stop before the canopy, that’s four extra vehicles potentially on Sowams Rd. that could be in our driveway.  Finally, the person dropping your child off at school needs to remain in their vehicle.  Your child needs to be able to get out of the vehicle quickly and be able to close the door on their own.  (Yes, frozen doors do happen at times and we understand that.)

Have a great day.

Best,

Jim Callahan

Principal
