Notes from Ms. Slaughter - Electronic Devices: Adolescents and electronic devices - it is hard to keep up! A reminder that students are to keep all electronic devices (phones, watches, wireless headphones) in their locker all day. Here are some suggestions for topics you can check in with your middle school student about: 6th and 7th grade - if your student has a personal device that they can text from, it is more than likely they are active in at least one group chat and/or group phone call. Sometimes a group chat can be a small group of friends that communicate about school related issues. Sometimes a group chat gets very large (over 100 people), contains numbers your student does not know and spirals quickly into negativity. The reports we receive about larger group chats mention that content in a larger group chat may contain inappropriate language, homophobic language, racist language and sexualized language. Recommendation: students remove themselves from large group chats so that they do not get caught up in anything inappropriate. Questions to ask: What can you/would you do if the group chat does have some language that is not appropriate? 8th grade - talk to your student about sharing personal, often sensitive, information about themselves online/through text and/or chat. Personal information can include pictures, location information and other private details about their lives. Often students do not understand that once you share this information you no longer have control over where that information goes and who gets it/sees it (even if they think it is going to a trusted peer) and make an impulsive choice. Recommendation: students should not share personal information, pictures or private details with peers OR on social media accounts. If something is shared with them that is inappropriate they should delete it and inform an adult immediately. Questions to ask: What would you do if someone asked you to send them an inappropriate picture or text? What if someone sent one to you without you asking? |

Eagle Honor Society: BMS is excited to announce the launch of our honor society, The Barrington Middle School Eagle Honor Society. In recent town hall meetings, this was discussed and introduced to our students. The Barrington Middle School Eagle Honor Society recognizes students who exemplify academic excellence, personal growth, and outstanding character in our school community. Members demonstrate sustained scholarly academic achievement through honor roll performance or significant academic growth, maintain excellent attendance and punctuality, and actively contribute through community service both within our school and the broader community. In the BMS Eagle Honor Society Portfolio, candidates must provide evidence and thoughtful reflections showcasing their embodiment of our Vision of the Graduate components: character, citizenship, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and communication. Selection also requires a character reference letter from a teacher who can attest to the student's exceptional qualities. Inductees and their families are celebrated at a year-end ceremony, and their achievements are permanently honored through displays in our school hallways, serving as an enduring inspiration for current and future Eagles. Membership in the Eagle Honor Society represents the highest standard of what it means to be a Barrington Middle School student. Please see the following link for more information on how you/your child can be a member of the Eagle Honor Society. |

Community Service Club: Have you ever stepped into a muddy puddle and gotten your socks wet? For the whole day, you had to walk around with your socks squishing and rubbing against your feet, all the while your toes were freezing cold because of the water that filled to the brim in your shoes. Imagine how awful that must have felt. Now multiply that by a few months. That's what people without a home feel like, and they can’t even dry them off! Socks are the most requested item of clothing in the US, and they are super cheap! Donate a pair of socks and help prevent anyone from having to experience this ever again! Also, participate in our sock spirit week! |

Great work team! Do you know of a BMS Faculty/Staff/Student member who is shining bright? If you do, please complete the form below and we can include the nomination in an upcoming newsletter. |

Barrington Farm School: Why compost? The health of the world’s soil is declining. The United States is losing soil at ten times faster than its natural replenishment rate. By some estimates, if current trends continue, people will deplete all of the Earth’s topsoil in around 60 years. Without topsoil, we can’t grow food! But, there is a solution. Adding compost replenishes topsoil by restoring organic matter, improving soil structure, adding nutrients, and restoring soil health.
