DEIB October 2023: DEIB October 2023

EAch month, BMS recognizes a number of Holidays and Days of Remembrance as identified in the district’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity calendar. Below you will find our October Holidays and Days of Remembrance.

October 9:Indigenous People Day

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a holiday that is celebrated on the second Monday of October in many parts of the United States. On this day, people are encouraged to remember and celebrate the many indigenous people who have traditionally lived and currently live in the U.S and its territories.

October 10: World Mental Health Day

Observed annually on October 10th, World Mental Health Day is a public awareness observance day to raise the public’s awareness about mental health issues that affect people all over the globe. It also gives mental health workers, doctors, nurses and other professionals a chance to dispel mental health myths, reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues and to help people recognize when they or their friends and family members may need to seek treatment. This holiday has been observed internationally since 1992.

October 14: Day of the Defender UKRAINE

This national holiday honors the rich traditions of the Ukrainian people. It honors the bravery and heroism of those who defended Ukrainian independence, territorial integrity, military traditions, and victories of the Ukrainian people. October 14 is also the anniversary of the formation of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks.

October 19: Spirit Day -Anti Bullying

LGBTQ youth disproportionately face bullying and harassment because of their identities. Each year, millions go purple for Spirit Day to support LGBTQ youth in a united stand against bullying.

Spirit Day is an annual LGBTQ awareness day observed on the third Thursday in October.

October 20: The Birth of the Bab

Siyyid Ali-Muhammad would become known to the world as the Bab (meaning “the Gate” in Arabic). The Bab was the symbolic gate; it was His mission to herald the coming of this promised Manifestation of God whom we know to be Baha’u’llah. In the Baha’i calendar, the Birth of the Bab and the Birth of Baha’u’llah are celebrated one after the other in one festival referred to as the “Twin Holy Days”.

October 31: Halloween

Halloween is a holiday celebrated each year on October 31, and Halloween 2023 will occur on Tuesday, October 31. The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts.

Sportsnight Information:

Our first sportsnight of the year is scheduled for Friday, October 13, 2023 from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm for 6th and 7th grade BMS students only. (note: 8th graders will have their first sportsnight in November- Date TBD)

Sportsnights:

We are excited to inform you that BMS will continue our longstanding tradition of hosting Sportsnights for our BMS students. Please see the helpful hints below. Looking forward to a fun evening!

What are Sportsnights?

  • Sportsnights are opportunities for students to socialize outside of school hours.

  • A DJ provides music in the student union and the large gymnasium is open for basketball and other games. In addition, we will have board games, organized games, and quiet areas for students to play and relax. Proceeds from ticket sales and snack sales go to the student council and clubs/clusters that are hosting the event.

  • Sportsnights are chaperoned by the Principal, Assistant Principal, Teachers, and Staff.

What are Sportsnights Procedures/Expectations:

  • Only BMS students may attend.

  • Students need to be present all day during the day of a Sportsnight to attend.

  • Tickets are $5 at the door. It is helpful for students to have exact change.

  • Students may bring additional money for snacks.

  • Drop off: Front loop or side parking lot; not before 6:50pm.

  • Pick up: Students are dismissed at 9:00pm. Parents may pick up in the front loop or side of the building.

  • Cell phone rules: No cell phone use in Sportsnight. If students need to make a call, please have your child see one of the chaperones.

  • If for some reason a student needs to leave early, the student may only be picked up by his/her family member. Students will not be able to go home early from a Sportsnight with another parent.

~ BMS Spotlight on Learning ~

This week, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on our entire BMS Learning Community! As previously mentioned, I wish I could bottle up the appreciation, gratitude, and positivity shared with me the other night at Open House. Family member after family member stopped to thank me and share their appreciation for their child’s experience at BMS. They were so impressed with all of you for the dedication, enthusiasm, and professionalism you bring to the craft of teaching and learning!

This week, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mrs. Place. Mrs. Place is the nicest teacher ever. She always makes an effort to be kind and helpful to every student, regardless of what kind of day she is having. She always does everything she can to make sure each and every student has an equal opportunity to do well, and wants them to do well. (Nominated by a BMS Student)

This week, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Biko Alston-Hanna. When a student dropped his folder and all of his papers were on the ground, Biko was right there to lend a hand while others ignored the situation completely. Great work, Biko. Thanks for looking out for your peers. (Nominated by a member of our BMS Faculty)

This week, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mrs. Dalessio. Thank you for being a great teacher and making learning fun. (Nominated by a BMS student)

Do you know of a BMS Faculty/Staff/Student member that is shining bright? If you do, please complete the form below and we can include the nomination in an upcoming newsletter.
