Barrington School Committee Recommends Tecton Architects as Design Firm for School Construction Project

BARRINGTON, RI – The Barrington School Committee voted unanimously (5-0) on June 22, 2023, to recommend that School Administration enter contract negotiations with Tecton Architects, a New England-based architecture, design and master planning firm, as the architectural services provider for Barrington Public Schools (BPS).

With offices in Westerly, Rhode Island, and Hartford, Connecticut, Tecton has provided architectural design services to many school districts across southern New England. The firm has previously supported districts with developing inclusive plans for dynamic buildings that meet the physical, social, and emotional learning needs of twenty-first century students. Two important considerations influenced the selection of Tecton: their ability to design educational spaces that inspire learning and their varied experience creating building design plans that include renovation, rehabilitation, and replacement of old buildings.

As the architectural firm supporting BPS and the Barrington School Building Committee during preparation of its Stage II Necessity of School Construction application for the Rhode Island Department of Education, Tecton will perform key design services for BPS including developing a school construction plan that provides Barrington students and educators with safe, equitable, and enriching environments for learning and teaching.

The selection of Tecton is an important step in Barrington Public Schools’s progress toward developing a long-term educational facilities plan that addresses infrastructure, space, and security needs of the District’s school buildings. Tecton, along with the project’s OPM, Downes Construction, will also support community engagement efforts to ensure that the Town of Barrington and its residents are informed participants in the Stage II process and that facilities projects represent both the community’s educational needs and its budget.
